Haumea Rulership, Make-Make Rulership, All Rulerships!

As an astrologer I always had a hard time with the idea that Cancer was ruled by the Moon and Leo by the Sun since neither of those 2 celestial bodies seem intuitively right to me, besides the fact that neither are planets. With the discovery of Haumea and Make-Make I found my answer (for now).

I believe Haumea is the true ruler of Cancer. She is a Great Goddess figure who gave birth to all other Gods and Goddesses and provided endless nutrients for her children. Cancer is not only the sign that rules motherhood, but also the breast and stomach, both connected with food and physical nurturing. There is also another name for her that connects her to the sea which again makes sense as their appears to be a connection between the sign of Cancer and emotion (especially unconscious emotion) which is symbolized by the sea or the ocean.  Here’s a very simplified version of her story: http://storiesforchildren.tripod.com/id297.html

Very little is known about Make-Make, but His name alone says a lot. Leo rules the 5th house of creativity and fertility (children), love affairs and gambling. Well, Make-Make is a fertility God and one can not be more literal when speaking about the nature of creativity, it is to Make things of course.

I wanted to put these two rulerships out there for consideration and research by astrologers. It’s always been my intuition that every sign has a planet as its ruler, one in the sky, in our solar system. I’m sure as we move forward in our study of the heavens we will find other cosmic influences which will provide deeper understanding.

All planets seem to have at least one Moon and most many more than just one. And the Sun is so different in all respects that it doesn’t make sense that it would rule over one particular sign. In fact I feel that the Sun has no natal rulership, meaning it is not stronger in any particular sign, it is just colored through a different lens and nothing more.

If one were to see Leo (the traditional sign associated with the Sun) as sign the Sun rules over than one would have to put its opposite (Sun in Aquarius) in its fall, meaning that the Sun would be weak at that point. In a sense this is true, the Sun is in Aquarius in the dead of winter if one lives in the Northern Hemisphere but of course the opposite is true if one lives in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Sun actually falls in the middle of summer there when it travels through Aquarius. I find this problematic and always have – it implies one set of rules for the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth and another for the Southern which doesn’t seem true.

I can see how the idea evolved – we didn’t know the difference between a planet and a star when astrology came into being, and the system was invented in the Northern Hemisphere where the Sun was far off and cold during late January and into mid-February.  If the ancients had lived in Australia they would have reversed this. It’s also interesting to note that the Chinese system seems to (in a weird sort of way) mirror our Western system. I’ll give some examples to explain myself here.

The Chinese system breaks down astrology into 12 signs which correlate to the 12 Western sidereal signs and months, let me explain. I’ll start with where the contemporary Chinese lunar calendar usually starts now (due to trying to correlate it to our western solar calendar) in late January or early February with what works out to be the start of the Tiger month, and sidereal sign of Aquarius the Water-bearer. Now during this period the Earth is in the sign of Leo and during the summer when our western sidereal sign would be Leo the Chinese call that the month of the Monkey – this is the only sign in the Chinese system that comes close to what we in the west call, a human sign. And of all the western human signs (Gemini, Sagittarius – half-human, Libra – a scale) Aquarius is the most human, ruling over humanity itself and the milk of human kindness, ingenuity, science and technology.

Ironically, this switcheroo happens often, it’s as if the Chinese is incorporating an earth-centric astrology. Let me explain quickly that when the Sun is in a sign, the earth is in its opposite sign. So when the Sun is in Aquarius, the earth itself is traveling through the sign of Leo which is why it is said that the shadow side of someone’s Sun side is in its opposite sign, making people of opposing Sun signs both attracted to one another and able to drive each other nuts like nobodies business.

I’ll go through the list of Chinese and Western astrology to illustrate my point better. After Aquarius-Tiger comes Pisces-Rabbit month and opposite of Pisces Rabbit is Virgo-Rooster. Aries-Dragon has its opposite in Libra-Pig. Taurus-Snake has its opposite in Scorpio-Dog – to me this one was another obvious switch as it is said in western astrology there are 3 levels of Scorpio, the scorpion, the snake and the eagle – meaning depending on how evolved the Scorpio is, he/she can either be Charlie Manson or ascend to the heights of Gandhi, most however are probably snakes neither transcendent nor poisonous. Then we have Gemini-Horse opposite Sagittarius-Rat (again Sag is half horse) and finally Cancer-Sheep opposite Capricorn-Ox.

If one reads the descriptions the Chinese have given to each of the signs it becomes obvious that they have found a way to merge elements of the sun and earth in their interpretation of their signs unlike our culture which is entirely heliocentric. Their understanding of the signs is more yin-yang balanced taking into consideration the influence of both the Sun’s energy traveling through the zodiac and the Earth’s direct influence traveling through the opposite sign.

Just some astrological thoughts to share.

Best wishes,

Denise

Metal Tiger Year… Starting 2-14-2010

OK, the Metal Tiger Year starts on Valentine’s day this year. If one doesn’t know much about Chinese astrology it would seem that Tiger would be a good year, strong, valiant, etc. However in reality the Chinese feel this to be a year when conflict is at a peak and there will more than likely be more war, conflict and in my opinion there could be the second in what I called the “book end” market crash and what Obama recently called the double bump or something like that.

Tiger will cause over confidence, aggression and being in metal makes it even more harsh. The Chinese is not into too much of one kind of energy, it’s considered bad, balance is the goal (unlike western astrology which often favors the excess of an energy in a sign as a sign of genius or special talent). It is said to be a bad year for people born in the year of the Tiger, so if you were born in 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 (the cycle is every 12 years) then take care of your health and stay out of arguments. Do your best to avoid conflicts, try meditation, yoga and focusing on keeping calm and out of lawsuits as you will likely not due well in legal disputes this year. Of course if you keep calm and stay focused you can do fine (I’m not a fatalist) however your instinct will be to leap before looking so keep yourself in check.

If you are born in the year of the Rabbit or Pig I think this is supposed to be a lucky year for you. For everyone else it’s mixed.

Best wishes and many blessings,

Denise

Chinese Astrology It’s Much More than You know it to be…

Although Chinese astrology is not my area of expertise, I did learn the basics from a friend of mine’s mother who was an astrologer using the Chinese animal system. The animal system isn’t just the year one is born in, as we westerners are taught, it is also the month, day and hour one which all play their part. In reality the day of birth is considered to be the actual person, where as the year is considered to be representational of the ancestors, the hour – one’s children. But as in all things astrological, it’s not quite that simple. Here’s a link to find out you and your loved ones animals. It’s a very informative and interesting website, by far the best for real Chinese Astrology: http://chinesehoroscopeonline.com/ChineseHoroscope.htm

Some basic things to know about Chinese astrology are: there are 2 different systems, one that uses the animals and the other that uses fixed stars and is referred to as the four pillars or four pillars of destiny. The later I know very little about, the former I know enough to give a basic reading although the nuances of the system I’m sure are lost on my very western mind. Over the years of studying the Chinese animal system, I’ve come to realize that the animal system has a lot in common with western tropical astrology, although it appears to take the same information and come from the earth side or shadow side of the self. By this I mean that western astrology uses the sun as it’s center, so when the sun is going through the sign of Capricorn (the constellation) it is said the person is a Capricorn. However at that same time the earth is opposing the Sun and going through the sign of Cancer. This is often why people who are opposites are kind of two sides of the same coin and often have extreme conflicts which, with maturity can be balanced and resolved in a way that isn’t possible with a square (which have similar properties to an opposition in that a square is made up of two planets that are either, cardinal, or two that are fixed or 2 that are mutable – this is true also of an opposition).  So astrologers refer to the sign the earth in at birth (example I’m an Aquarius, my earth therefore is in Leo) as the shadow side of the personality, the part that is hidden by and from the individual which is why opposites find one another annoying, they see the dark side of themselves in the other. However, as one makes peace with the darker or ego nature of themselves, the opposition becomes about balance and both the earth side and the sun side find equilibrium in the personality.

But back to Chinese astrology. Interestingly, the Chinese seem to have taken the side of the earth as the main part of the personality. So for example I’m an Aquarius which corresponds (in terms of the western month system) with Tiger and of course in western astrology Leo (the opposite of Aquarius) is a lion. The Leo month corresponds to Monkey in Chinese astrology, the closest thing the Chinese have to the human form (Aquarius is one of the rare human only figures of the zodiac).  So chances are good if you are a Capricorn you were born in the month of the Ox in Chinese astrology, if an Aquarius = a Tiger, a Pisces = Rabbit, Aries = Dragon, Taurus = Snake, Gemini = Horse, Cancer = Sheep, Leo = Monkey, Virgo = Rooster, Libra = Dog,  Scorpio = Pig, Sagittarius = Rat. The only discrepancy will come if one is born within the first six degrees or last 25 degrees of a sign. This is because they use what is called the sideral system which accounts for the change or shift in the poll over the past 2000 years.

Although I am born in the year of the fire sheep/goat I’m actually a wood Dragon due to my day. Check out the link, it will definitely make a lot more sense and is an intriguing system to learn about.

Best wishes and many blessings,

Denise

Some Internet Resources…

I’ve been meaning to post about these 2 very excellent websites for a long time. One is a western astrology site that will calculate your chart for free. They also give limited interpretation as well. But for those people interested in studying astrology, this is an excellent way to keep a database of friends and families charts online for free all you have to do is set up an account and you can have as many charts on their as you like. I have had to use them recently as my old computer with the astrology software died. The name of the site is astrodienst and the site address is:
http://www.astro.com/

And for anyone interested in Chinese Astrology there is an excellent site that will tell you about the 4 pillars and give you your animal breakdown for the year, day, month and time of birth. Here is the link to the calculator for you to find out what 4 animals you are.

http://chinesehoroscopeonline.com/YourSign.htm

I noticed the hour animal is no longer calculated on this site but if you get a basic book on chinese astrology you can figure it out as the animal is always associated with the same hour, it doesn’t matter where you are born or what time of year.

All the best to you and more later…

Denise
